Am I Blue?

Question: What is the theme of the story and how does it apply to real life?

In life, not everyone always excepts you, sometimes you don't even except yourself for who you are. In the story Am I Blue by Bruce Caville, the main character, Vincent, is struggling to figure out whether or not he is gay. He is constantly getting beat up and people are making assumptions that he is gay, before he can even figure out for himself.  I think that the theme of the story is to except everyone for who they are and except yourself for who you are. This can apply to real life too.

The theme of the story is that you need to except everyone for who they are to except yourself for who you are. The author portraits this theme through Vincent's fairy godfather. Vincent's fairy godfather, Melvin, is gay and totally at ease with the fact. He even embraces it. He is constantly saying things like, "Honey, I gave my life to be able to walk like this. Don't you dare try to stop me now." The author shows the theme of the story by showing a character who excepts himself.

The theme of the story can apply to real life too. For example, it can apply to anybody who is gay. Or, it can apply to anyone who has trouble being excepted, or has trouble excepting themselves. It also can show people who have trouble excepting others that it's okay to be different. It basically can apply to almost everyone in life.

In conclusion, the theme of the story is to except everyone for who they are and except yourself for who you are. This theme can apply to real life too.
